Soils: The soils in Oakville, Napa Valley play a crucial role in producing high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon. The region is known for its diverse soil types, which include gravelly loam, clay, and volcanic ash. These unique soil compositions contribute to the richness and complexity of the wines produced in the AVA. The gravelly loam soils offer excellent drainage, allowing the vines to develop deep root systems and access the necessary nutrients and water. The clay soils provide good water retention, ensuring the vines have a steady supply of moisture during the dry season. Additionally, the volcanic ash soils enrich the wines with minerality and add a distinct character. The combination of these soil types creates a perfect environment for growing Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, resulting in wines that exhibit exceptional depth, structure, and flavor.

2019 Vintage: The beginning of the 2019 growing season was defined by rainfall and late soil moisture. The long, warm summer saw few extreme heat events, with foggy mornings setting the stage for vibrant and expressive wines. The long finish to the season, not without moments of unpredictability, helped to preserve freshness and finesse in the fruit with abundant hang time teasing out great color, structure and soft tannins. Volume is looking to be about average to a little less than average. All in all, exceptional fruit with bright acidity and ample texture promises an amazing vintage.

Tasting Notes: Deep garnet-purple in color, it bursts from the glass with lilacs, dark chocolate, ripe black and red cherries, and licorice notes plus hints of cedar. Medium to full-bodied, finely grained, and elegant, the palate offers an intensity of crunchy black and red fruits, finishing long and fragrant.

The steep terrain is primarily made up of eastern facing slopes with good drainage and elevation ranging from 400 to 2600 feet above sea level.

Spring Mountain’s craggy façade mean that the vineyards tend to be small, spread out and surrounded by forest. This provides some shade and protection for the vines, as does the east-facing hills. The elevation also mitigates Napa Valley’s heat so in general Spring Mountain Cabernets are quite tannic and age worthy as well as elegant and not overly fruity.

Tasting Notes: The 2019 Place Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley has a deep garnet-purple color and nose of crushed black cherries, blackberries, and red and black currants with touches of dried herbs, damp soil and an herbaceous tone. Full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins supporting the generous black fruit and earthy layers, it has a lovely herbal lift to the long finish. 92 POINTS INTERNATIONAL WINE REVIEW

Soils: The valley's largest alluvial fan formed by Dry Creek creates the defining feature of the district. The northwest area is composed of volcanically derived soils, with stony or gravelly consistency. Southern and eastern areas transition from gravel to silty clay loam near the river. Irrigation is often essential. Known for its relatively cooler climate, and long growing season, the Oak Knoll District is one of Napa Valley's more renowned sub-appellations. Oak Knoll is one of Napa Valley’s flatter appellations and it enjoys primarily deep loam soils. Its location to the north of Napa city places it right in the path of the daily fog that creeps up from the Bay, making it one of the cooler AVAs. From a climatic perspective, the regular fog keeps the temperatures down, which means the wines tend to be among the more elegant and understated in Napa Valley.

2021 Cabernet Sauvignon - Napa Valley - Chiles Valley AVA

Composition: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon

Appellation: Chiles Valley

Vineyard: Koko Nor

Alcohol: 14.5%

Climate: Fairly warmer summer days (mid-80s°F or 29°C)

Elevation: 600 to 1,200 feet (183 to 366 m)

Winemaker: Philip Zorn

Soils: Soils are mostly marine in origin. Valley floor features fertile alluvial soils composed of silty clay. Hillsides are composed of more clay-loam and stony-clay The Chiles Valley AVA is a sub-appellation of the Napa Valley AVA, located in the town of St Helena on the eastern side of the Vaca mountain range, It is a long, skinny, high-elevation valley that boasts more vineyards than wineries and enjoys primarily volcanic soils. The valley is completely ringed by mountains so, while the elevation plays a cooling role, the valley’s architecture can sometimes act like an oven, trapping the hot air. The few wines that do hail exclusively from Chiles Valley tend to be fully flavored but with a notable elegance, due to the prolonged growing season created by the elevation. Chiles Valley has a relatively cooler climate than the valley floor due to the high elevations from 600 to 1200 feet above sea level and cooling breezes making their way from the Pacific Ocean.

2021 Vintage: The vintage will be remembered for low yields with intensely flavored, small-sized berries and a smooth harvest season. It started off with very little rain, leading to the 2nd year of drought conditions in Napa Valley, Harvest began early with red wine grapes beginning on August 31. While concerning in the long term, the drought of 2021 resulted in a more natural load on the vines, requiring less pruning and dropping of fruit. The resulting grapes are packed full of flavor.

Tasting Notes: Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2021 Chiles Valley AVA Cabernet Sauvignon is beautifully scented of crushed red currants, cassis, mulberries, and plums over suggestions of sandalwood, Sichuan pepper and cedar chest. Although full-bodied and built like a brick house, elegance shows through the firm structure, and muscular fruit, through the mid-palate and all the way to the very long finish.
